Opera Virgins in Stone Go all the Way

Stone Revellers Theatre company are taking on their first ever opera, and bringing to the Staffordshire stage the most popular of all Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedy operas, The Mikado.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Stone Revellers Theatre company are taking on their first ever opera, and bringing to the Staffordshire stage the most popular of all Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedy operas, The Mikado.

The Staffordshire community theatre group certainly don’t shy away from challenges such as this, and it’s equally noted that they often programme plays and musicals that are a ‘bit off the beaten track’ from your usual amateur dramatic fare.

Over the past few years they have taken on Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem and even a theatre version of The Vicar of Dibley …. and their next production later in the year will be a live stage version of the anarchic cult C4 comedy, Father Ted.

So this April 2016, inspired by the likes of Jonathan Miller`s iconic production of The Mikado at the English National Opera, they now bring the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera classic to Staffordshire theatregoers.

Actually this is probably the most perfect opera for first-time opera director, Leo Capernaros, to tackle.  Of course it’s challenging, but it does have and incredible line up of OTT characters, plus a sense of fun and a almost a modern ‘pantomime style’ quality that is a joy to direct and to watch.

“This is the first musical I’ve directed, and frankly I’m right out of my comfort zone. Give me some good old-fashioned dialogue and I find my natural place in the rehearsal room, however as soon as the keyboard kicks in for yet another ‘big number’ my head starts to spin. It’s technical, time consuming and there has to be dancing…HELP!”

However he also acknowledges that he is well supported by an excellent production team, Musical Director Susie Dickson, Choreographer Harri Baile and a G&S obsessed Assistant Director Ian Bowen.

SHOULD I SEE IT?

Certainly anyone thinking to themselves “Opera, no way, not my cup of tea” – should really give this one a go.  You’ll either discover a new found love for the genre, or you’ll forget that it’s an opera at all in about the first 10 minutes.  Either one, we promise that you’ll have a great time enjoying The Mikado.
