Learn the moves and go behind the scenes of Hairspray

During a special one workshop taking place at The Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, you will learn the choreography to the big routines and dance the morning away to the amazing show soundtrack.

After you’ve strutted your stuff to the beat of the sixties themed musical, you will then get an opportunity to tour the set and get up close to the larger-than-life props and costumes of this hit touring theatre show.

 

There are two morning workshops taking place on Saturday 14 May 2016, and they are open to anyone aged thirteen or above.  They are being presented as part of the Regent Theatre’s Community Education and Learning programme.  It costs £5 per person.  Details on how to book your space below.

TAKE THE HAIRSPRAY DANCE CLASS

If you want to get a head start on the day, or you can’t attend the actual workshops, never fear.  Below we have a very special 15 minute dance masterclass tutorial with the UK Tour Dance Captain Gavin Eden and cast members of Hairspray that you can follow from the comfort of your own home, or with your friends.

MORE ABOUT HAIRSPRAY

Hairspray was originally a 1988 non-musical satirical movie from John Waters, starring Divine, Debbie Harry and now chat show host Ricki Lake. Set in 1960s Baltimore the bright camp comedy was slickly combined with mild political comment about equal rights in working class America.

The movie gained something of a cult following, and several years later in 2002 the screenplay was developed into a Broadway stage musical, with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan,  The show hit the UK in West End in 2007, starring Michael Ball, in his first ever lead musical role playing a woman!  The show was an instant hit, and picked up several Oliver awards along the way, including for Best Musical.

The live show was also made into yet another movie version in 2007, this time starring  a fully ‘dragged up’ Jon Travolta, and a very fresh faced Zac Efron, in his first movie role since the success of the High School Musical trilogy.

Both the musical version of the movie and the stage show is lots of fun with big dance numbers, big characters, and  lots of very big hair. This latest UK tour of Hairspray comes to The Regent Theatre in Stoke in May 2016.  Just enough time for you to learn the dance routine.
