NEW SEASON AT NEW VIC ANNOUNCED

The new autumn season has been released for the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle under Lyme, headlined by a new revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s Henceforward, directed by the author himself.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The new autumn season has been released for the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle under Lyme, headlined by a new revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s Henceforward, directed by the author himself.

With the New Vic celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, it’s very fitting then that they stage this production – first produced in 1987 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough (the UKs first ever theatre-in-the-round, sister venue to the New Vic, and which ran under the artistic direction of Sir Alan Ayckbourn for many years). Learn more about the background of the New Vic Theatre here.

DOUBLE TREAT FOR AYCKBOURN FANS

It will also be a double treat for Ayckbourn fans, as he will also be bringing his Karaoke Theatre Company to the Staffordshire Theatre-in-the-Round for a week of semi-improvisational theatre, with four plays created live on the night, with you the audience calling most of the shots.  14 – 29 October 2016. You can also bang yourself a deal by booking both of these Alan Ayckbourn must see’s for just £35.

Check out an interview with Sir Alan Aykbourn in conversation here.

SNOW GUARANTEED THIS CHRISTMAS

The inspiration for Walt Disney’s most succesful animated feature film ever, will be getting the full ‘Theresa Heskins’ treatment this Christmas, with a specially adapated version of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairtytale, The Snow Queen.  (Hopefully) there will be no inclusion of ‘Let It Go’ in this version when it opens on 19 Nov 2016, playing right through to 28 January 2017, in what must be one of the longest christmas season in the country?

There will aslo be a special 30th Anniversary Gala performance of the Snow Queen on 25 Nov, helping to celebrate 3o years since local people raised more than £1 million to build a New Theatre in North Staffordshire, and which began the legacy of an incredible three decades of theatre making.

In addition to the main production of The Snow Queen, there will also be an accompanying 45 minute interactive performance devised by the same team, especially for 3-5 year olds and their grown-ups, called The Trail to the Snow Queen, playing from 10 to 31 December 2016.

BEST OF THE REST

Actor David Graham, having made the character of Uncle Eric and his dysfunctional comedy family something of a North Staffordshire tradition at the New Vic, returns with a couple of themed shows, including Maverick, set in the Wild Wild West from 30 August to 10 September 2016, and also he hosts the annual Eric’s Christmas Party from 28 November to Saturday 10 December 2016.

The rest of the autumn season is largely made up of a mix of stand up comedy and music one nighters, a bit of folk and jazz, and a return to the good old days of traditional Victorian Music Hall.  You can check out the full autumn season, as well as snap up those first night offers by visiting the New Vic Theatre website.

HISTORY

The New Vic Theatre origins go back to the late Stephen Joseph, director, actor, designer, lecturer and writer who in the late 1950’s, founded a small theatre Company to explore a new layout for performance: theatre-in-the-round.

The company’s first base was Scarborough from which it toured to towns without their own theatres. Newcastle-under-Lyme was visited regularly and eventually a permanent North Staffordshire home was planned. On 9 October 1962, a converted Staffordshire cinema opened its doors as a theatre.

By 1983, having built a highly respected reputation and audience, the then director, Peter Cheeseman, launched an appeal to raise funds for a new theatre.  With local donations totalling over £1 million, the New Vic opened in August 1986.  After twenty-five years work dedicated to the people of North Staffordshire, Cheeseman’s passion and determination finally achieved the realisation of Stephen Joseph’s vision: the first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round in Europe.

Today, under the artistic direction of Theresa Heskins, the New Vic Theatre continues to enjoy massive success, building on its enviable reputation as a leader in producing and making theatre, not only in the UK, but across the world.  Locally the New Vic theatre delivers a £12.5 million impact on the Staffordshire economy, with around 150,000 annual visits to the building and an 11% growth in audiences over the last five years.

INFORMATION

The New Vic Theatre is unique to Staffordshire for a few reasons.  Firstly its the official regional producing theatre for Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire creating around eight productions per year.  Secondly as a theatre-in-the-round, it brings with it a less traditional setting in which to enjoy world class theatre production.

The New Vic is also big on community and the contribution it makes.  It also is well regarded for its sterling collaborative work with writers, directors and other producing theatres.

It is funded by the Arts Council England, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
