The grounds of Stafford Castle are this summer to be transformed into the setting of a beautiful new production of arguably Shakespeare’s most famous and certainly most romantic play – Romeo and Juliet.

In its 30th anniversary year, Stafford Shakespeare returns with this explosive production, bristling with vitality and swagger.

Two young people find hope in an all-consuming love, risking everything to be together.

The Capulet and Montague families are rivals in a dangerous neighbourhood. When their feud once again spills out onto the streets, what will it take to end the bloodshed?

WHAT’S IT ABOUT – Spoiler Alert

An age-old vendetta between two powerful families – the Montagues and Capulets – erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party, at which a young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father’s choice, the County Paris.  And so begins a chain of events that lead these star crossed lovers spiralling toward ultimate tragedy.

DID YOU KNOW…

The original play is believed to be written bewteeen 1591 and 1595, and thought to be Shakespeare’s tenth play.

Juliet is only 13 when she meets and marries Romeo, but we never learn how old he is.

In the original productions, Juiliet was probably played by a man or a boy, as women were not allowed to act

The first reference to the sworn enemies ‘Montagues and Capulets’ is in the poetry of Dante, not Shakespeare

The famous ‘balcony’ scene probably didn’t involve a balcony. In the stage directions for Romeo and Juliet and the famous ‘balcony scene’ (Act 2 Scene 2), Shakespeare writes that Juliet appears at a ‘window’, but he doesn’t mention a balcony.  In fact the term ‘balcony’ wasn’t probably invented until later in the 1600s

Romeo and Juliet will open on 25 June 25th 2020 and run until 11 July at Stafford Castle.  Booking is open now [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
