[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As part of the Staffordshire Film Archive Season at The Stoke Film Theatre a fascinating evenings worth of historic documentary footage has been collated for a unique screening as part of the 30 year anniversary of the New Victoria Theatre in Newcastle Under Lyme.

During the special screening you can follow the story of the plans of the fund-raising and building of the New Vic through many filmed archive events and interviews collected right through to the opening in August 1986, including lots about Peter Cheeseman, the driving force behind the vision for the New Vic.

Almost 90% of the construction costs were paid for by residents of north Staffordshire and local businesses.

“In every way the New Vic has been built by local people,” wrote Cheeseman.

You will be able to see the current Stoneyfields site being cleared of trees, the cutting of the first sod and performances on the site – as well as the physical construction of the new theatre.  When the New Vic opened in 1986, critics hailed the theatre as a triumph.

The Financial Times declared the new venue “a 20th Century version of Shakespeare’s Globe”.

Peter Cheeseman, Sir Ben Kingsley, Robert Powell, Alan Ayckbourn, Sheila Hancock and many more actors and people involved have been captured in the documentary film charting the great ‘push’ to achieve the new theatre – including Arthur Berry reciting his Ode to the New Vic.  You can also see and hear the wonderful opening speech on opening night by Staffordshire born film/TV and stage actor Freddie Jones.

The screening is totally FREE and takes place at Stoke-on-Trent Film Theatre on Wednesday Oct 5th starting at 7:45pm

Please note that seats cannot be reserved – so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
